Significant care was taken to ensure the software's interface and command-line support are very easy to use, yet without sacrificing the powerful functionality. Conversions can be performed on an entire folder of files simply by passing the folder name to the /f switch for command-line support or using the Add Folder command via the interface. For command-line, wildcards and comma delimited filenames are also supported. Even multiple paths can be separated by a comma, or any combination of filename(s), paths, and wildcards. Furthermore, when converting a path, you can specify a switch or interface option for all subfolders of the passed folder to also be included. Additional built-in options include: error logging, the ability to automatically use the source file's path for conversion output, overwriting of existing files or overwrite protection (to append a unique numeric value to the end of the base filename for existing files), deletion of source file(s) after successful conversion, FreeDB support when ripping from CD, and more.

Sony PsP

A little while back Sony announced a partnership with Sky TV, for them to bring video on demand to its Playstation Portable console, and luckily for us the service has just gone live with a free one month trial subscription.

Users will be able to download shows from providers such as ABC, ESPN, Disney, BBC, Sony, NBC and Sky Sports, and is only available via PC – unfortunately you can only download the programming via your PC and then upload it to your PSP unit, but with the Wi-Fi speed that the PSP generates, it would take months to just download one show, so it’s probably a good thing.

“Programming will range from US dramas such as library series of Lost and Desperate Housewives (produced by ABC Studios) to hit UK shows such as Doctor Who and Top Gear (from BBC Worldwide) through to FA Premier League football action and blockbuster movies.” – Sky & Sony
Like standard Sky packages, it will be available in three different genres – Comedy, Sport and Entertainment, and once the free month’s trial expires you will expect to pay:

But there is no need to subscribe, if you simply want to download one specific show it will cost you £1.50 and films will cost you £2.50. New content will be added on a regular basis, so if you’re bored and need something to watch, dust off your PSP and get downloading.

BUGS ABOUND IN IPHONE 2.O

Instead of happily tapping their touch screens, many iPhone users are using their fingers to point accusingly at Apple -- and the developers of iPhone applications.

That's because of widespread reliability and operating issues associated with the multimedia device's hardware and software upgrades last week.

Since Apple’s combined iPhone 3G/2.0 launch July 11, some users have reported frequent application crashes, inadvertent reboots or overall lag. It's not clear what's causing the problems: A poorly debugged operating system, or poorly-written apps.

That's to be expected with a major new upgrade, said Raven Zachary, founder of iPhoneDevCamp, who said the fault should be shared between Apple and the independent developers who create iPhone apps.

"The hope is most people understand we’re dealing with new technology and there are going to be kinks along the way,” Zachary said. “We’re all in this together, whether we’re developers, Apple, or consumers, and these issues will pass.”

Many users have reported that restoring their iPhones has fixed most issues related to application crashes. It’s clear in some cases, however, that application crashes are solely due to developers rushing their software to be released in concurrence with the launch of the App Store.

In some cases, developers are laudably up-front about the problems. For example, the description for Fit, a $15 application that tracks your calorie intake, reads “ * THIS VERSION OF FIT HAS SHIPPED WITH A CRASHING BUG…. We are truly sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. We love this app ourselves and are excited to make the intended user experience available to people.”

In addition to operating issues, users have reported other minor complaints, such as the lengthy amount of time it takes to sync iPhone applications with iTunes.

Zachary said he expected a bug-fixing iPhone software update from Apple as well as improvements in developers’ applications over the next month or two.

“I think we’re going to see some very great stuff very soon—more accelerometer usage, more location usage,” he said. “There’s a lot of stuff out there that hasn’t even begun pushing the limits.”

NINTENDO DSI WILL COME LOADED WITH EXTRA RAM

Nintendo's DSi will be loaded with more RAM than the DS Lite, according to Opera CEO Jon von Tezchner. In an interview with TechTree, the man responsible for web surfing on Nintendo's handheld said that Opera would be sure to use the memory boost “efficiently.” That's great and all, but what does this mean for games? While the possibility of a completely DSi-only game is probably pretty low, maybe the next Nintendo creations take advantage of the new hardware for some DSi-exclusive features (like picture taking or music making).

NOKIA N82 MORE THAN

The Nokia N95 has been Nokia's best-selling smartphone of 2007, and with sales remaining strong and with no clear competitor from the other manufacturers, the N95 will probably continue to sell well into 2008. The role of the N82 then, is not to push the boundaries of technology any further, rather it's to offer essentially the same features as the N95, but in a different package that will broaden its appeal.

Although they look quite different, the specifications of the N82 and N95 are so nearly identical, that we'll refer you to our in-depth review of the Nokia N95 to learn more. The detailed specification is listed below. Suffice to say that you can't really get more from a phone than you can from the N82: possibly the best camera in a mobile phone (5 megapixels with autofocus and xenon flash), GPS navigation, a superb screen, high-speed 3G, WLAN, a huge memory, etc, etc.

Instead of repeating all of the things that we talked about in our N95 review, let's focus on the differences between the N82 and N95. Probably the most significant difference is the price: the N82 should retail for around £150 less than the N95. That's a big difference and presumably reflects the fact that this is repackaged technology. For this reason, we are hoping that the N82 will be less buggy than initial versions of the N95, although we've yet to see a Series 60 phone that didn't have some bugs. The screen on the N82 is slightly smaller, but the phone itself is slightly narrower and slimmer too. The weight is slightly less, but not enough to make any real difference. We prefer the keypad of the N95 - the N82 has fiddly little buttons - but with fewer "extra" buttons, the N82 arguably has a simpler user interface. One further difference is that the N82 ships with a 2 Gbyte memory card, whereas the N95 comes with a 4 or 8 Gbyte card.

The N82 may not have the looks of the N95, but is has 95% of the features for a lot less money, and we think that it deserves to be a hit!

THE BEST FREE SOFTWARE FOR WINDOWS

Audio Editing: If you ever wanted to do some basic audio recording, look no further than Audacity - it can record, remove noise from audio and also mix multiple sound track. With little effort, you can use Audacity to record live streaming music from Internet radio stations.

Video Editing: For videos, Windows Movie Maker from Microsoft is a good choice. It has all the basic video editing tools plus a good collection of transitions and video effects. For advanced usage, get the powerful VirtualDub - it has a number of filters (like video rotation), can create videos from image sequences, split videos or even extract sound from video tracks.

Instant Messenger: If your friends are spread across different services like Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN and others, get Pidgin and connect to all popular IM services using a single software. Pidgin provides a tabbed interface so the desktop won’t look cluttered even if you are simultaneously chatting with multiple buddies.

Computer Security: Your computer needs a firewall program like ZoneAlarm or Comodo Pro to stop spyware programs from connecting to websites secretly and for blocking any Internet intruders. For removing viruses from infected systems, AVG Antivirus and Avast are very reliable and unlike other commercial software, they are not heavy on system resources.

Multimedia Players: You may already have Windows Media Player and iTunes on your computer but they are not capable of playing all audio and video formats. For this reason, I recommend VLC Media Player that is light-weight and supports almost everything including DVDs and Flash Videos that you have downloaded from YouTube. Another option is GOM player.

Digital Photography: Taking photos with your digital camera is just half the job . For organizing your vast picture collection, get Google Picasa or Windows Live Photo Gallery. With Picasa, you can create Screensavers and Picture Collages while Live Gallery has a wonderful photo stitching feature for making panoramas. Both let you transfer pictures from the desktop to Flickr. For advanced photo editing, use Paint.NET or GIMP.

Windows Enhancements: If you like using keyboard more than the mouse, get Launchy - it helps you start your favorite programs (and documents) without touching the Windows Start Menu. TweakUI is another desktop enhancement to help you control the appearance of Windows, change the location of default folders and so much more.

Spring Cleaning: WinDirStat gives you a visual overview of files and folders that are consuming the bulk of space on your hard drive so you know where to hit the delete key when the drive is full. CCleaner with automatically find and remove all the unnecessary temp files from your computer reclaiming valuable hard drive space. It also clears all the junk from Windows registry so your system runs faster. MyUninstaller will help you remove software that do show up in Windows Add Remove control panel.

Desktop Email: If you like checking and replying to your web email from the desktop, Windows Live Mail and ThunderBird are worth considering. They let you check multiple e-mail accounts in one place, apply filters to incoming email, add another layer of protection from junk email, built-in RSS reader and best of all, you can work offline.

DVD Tools: For creating backup copies of your DVD video disks onto the hard drive, use DVD Shrink. For extracting movie scenes and MP3 music from DVDs, HandBrake is a good choice. It can also be used to export your DVDs into portable players like the iPod.

Other Worthy Mentions: HTTrack helps you create a mirror copy of any website on the hard drive for offline reading. Orbit Downloader lets you save streaming music and videos from almost every website. Copernic Desktop is an excellent software for finding emails, documents, photos and other multimedia files on your computer. Microsoft SyncToy provides a visual interface for synchronizing file folders between computers and external drives.

NOKIA N95 REVIEW

Nokia's N95 superphone is complicated, taking days for even the most experienced gadget journo to digest. That's why lots of reviews I've seen so far are either extremely light or 10,000 word stunners: This is one of those long ones. It's likely easier to pore over the phone yourself in our hardware and software gallery waltrough and come up with your own opinion. But If you want the text heavy version, here's what's great and terrible about this phone.

Aside from call quality, why Nokia's N95 Rocks:
1.GPS: The GPS is realy GPS, not some assisted-GPS that Sprint and Verizon have in their phones. That means you can really navigate with it, like I did, to streets around SF I wasn't too familiar with. (Specifically, the corner of Washington and Cherry, close to where the Zodiac killer blew away a Cabbie so many years ago.) The point of interest database is sizable and you can search for things by proximity (the nearest ATM or liquor store), and then get the phone dialing right up. Turn by turn is a subscription that'll cost you about $10 a month, and the voice nav won't read street names, but that, and the phone's persistant Lag aside, it rocks.

2.Camera: I detect a decent level of grain in these 5mp shots, and the shutter lag is horrendous, but WTF, it's a 5 mp cmera with carl zeis. There are great control for ISO, white balance, sharpness, contrast, and flash. And video comes in at 640 by 480 at 30fps. Not shabby. And the editing program are powerful, especially the photo editor's clip art feature. Proof is in the pudding: Check out Flickr's N95 photos

3. Life blog: Like other N-series phones, this one can post any text you take with the phone to a blog. I'm addicted to this. This can be done through the Lifeblog software, which will combine text and images into a blog post on typepad. The phone will send pictures Flickr's API, too. (And via Flickr's blog API, can send photos to most other blog ware.) Right now, Vox is the only site that will accept automated upload videos. But I'm willing to bet there's even a youtube uploader out there, considering the Symbian OS's dev community.

4. Media Playback: The mp3/video player is fairly straight forward, and that's why I like it. The speakers are unreasonably loud, in a good way, for a device of this side — as loud as the Samsung K5 with external speakers — and there's an EQ as well as visualizations. File support includes MP3/WMA/M4A, and AAC support for those soon to be unlocked iTunes/EMI files. The media playback buttons aren't the easiest to press, but they add to the simplicity and dedication this device has to AV. Add in support for Podcasts, even those of the video variety, and you're talking. (MPEG-4, H.264/AVC, H.263/3GPP, RealVideo 8/9/10)

5. Extras: I admit this is cheating on a list of 5, but all the little included apps really help bring the Nokia up. There are office document readers/editors, a standard convertor, calculator, zip utilities, GPS utilities, VOIP (Gizmo Project), a uPNP media server, and all your basic txt/sms/email/browsing/bluetooth, on and on and on. Feature-wise, it is what a phone could be, given today's technology, minus phone carrier greed. (All in our feature walkthrough.)

Why Nokia's N95 Sucks:
1. Battery: No matter what anyone says, the battery life on the N95 isn't good. You can justify it by considering how much power true GPS, WiFi, and those booming speakers take. Even turning off 3G access, as you won't find reception in the US, the phone will be begging for DC after an 18 hour day of moderate/heavy use.

2. HSDPA Europe only: This phone is a European variant, and its WCDMA 2100 radio can't tap Cingular's US band HSDPA. So, you're stuck with EDGE speeds when you're not close to WiFi. Here's a tip: Turn off the 3G support to save some battery life. And get used to using WiFi for the heavy Audio/Video Tranfers.

3. Laggy OS: I don't know whether to blame Symbian or Nokia, but I don't really care, who's fault it is: This phone is sluggish.
5. Hardware Feels Junky:Two words: Fisher Price. They should have packed these components into a denser package. The world's most powerful handset is also the thickest modern phone without a QWERTY. But consider all it does, and the fact that its still pocketable, and you can over look its rather portly 0.8 inch thickness. Full hardware rundown here.

5. Price: $750 dollars is an unsubsidized price, and I commend Nokia for bringing this unlocked beast of a phone to the US without carriers who'll lock up both the SIM slot and the multimedia features. But that's a lot of money. I'd find that more acceptable if the GPS didn't require a subscription, the office software edited without buying an upgrade, and if the rest of my complaints were firmly answered. You have to use this phone for yourself (or go on through the walkthroughs below) before you spend this much cash on a portable computer/phone/thingy. Even then, only the die hardest phone geeks and those who can benefit from the phone's liveblogging capabilities should consider it.
